Private Passion

A person whose made a name for himself in recent years is Elon Musk, The founder of companies such as; The Boring Company, SpaceX and Tesla. In my opinion I believe Mr. Musk is easily one of the smartest, most innovative people to have graced this Earth in q really long time. With his privately owned space exploration business called SpaceX, he has plans to send a man piloted voyage to Mars by the year of 2022 using their Falcon Heavy rocket ship that has proven in recent month that it can reuse its initial side thrusters by remotely landing them back on the launch pad without any damage done. The reuse of these rocket thrusters end up saving millions because no more need to be recreate for any future missions.

As far as his Tesla company that has faced scrutiny on its autonomous driving feature due to crashes, but those claims were found to be driver related and easily preventable if the driver was paying attention to the warning signs the Tesla’s system was relaying to them. But, the Tesla is in fact the first car to be able to drive its self, park itself and is filled with copious amounts of other features include ‘romantic mode’ to set the mood after date night, and dog mode for when dog owners leave their pup in the car, it set the inside car temperature to the perfect amount for the dog so it doesn’t overheat.

The Boring Company on the other hand makes various products including the likes of a real life hand-held flamethrower! But what I’m more interest by The Boring Company is the Hyper-loop that is currently going through its testing phase. The Hyper-loop is an underground road system where a shuttle or car is set on a magnetic steel line that makes the vessels travel at a consistent rate of approximately 110mph. A underground traveling system like this could get you from Cheyenne, WY to Houston, TX, a span of 1,152 miles across four states, in just a mere hour and a forty-five minutes as opposed to a 17 hour car ride. If he isn’t a household name now, Elon Musk will undoubtedly be one in a matter of years if he continues to manifest these mind boggling, futuristic, forward and progressive thinking.

Current Industry News Event

Something that caught my eye that really interested me about the current industry I work in, the food industry. Like many servers, we solely rely on the customer to pay us. Servers in America rely on tipping from the customer in order to make a living. Tipping short changes servers, inconveniences customers and makes the overall dining experience WORSE for everyone. Why is it the customers job to pay the restaurants employees humanely? Why don’t they just pay servers a normal amount of money and make the food more expensive? As a server, considering I make tips (based off of the customer), the restaurant only pays me a little over $2 an hour mainly for tax purposes.

This is a flawed system that affects the majority of my fellow workers in the restaurant industry and it needs to be fixed immediately. I’ve had a personal experience with a boss of mine who was asking of me to run other servers trays, meanwhile I was there for over an hour without a signal table, meaning I got paid nothing for being at my job for a whole hour. Don’t get me wrong, I am whole heartedly a team player especially when co-workers are in the weeds and need assistance. However, what I do for my co-workers has no correlation to wether or not I have enough money for food, rent, and other expenses, that reflects solely off of the people that I serve.

My Current Employment

Often times I hesitate to answer when I tell people I’m a server at an Outback Steakhouse. Obviously, it’s not something I want to be doing my whole life but as a full-time college student, it pays the bills for now… Barely. The truth of the matter is that working as a server has taught me some of the most valuable lessons thats can be applied to any scenario or job especially those that go hand and hand with sales. Working at Outback as exponentially improved my time management, public speaking and even my communication skills with customers and co-workers. Working in the restaurant industry is one thing I believe everyone should have to do for some period of time in their life because the benefits you can acquire through this industry can be translated in various career fields. I was also able to consistently maintain high quality customer service to over 24 customers in a face-paced environment all at once. One last thing I’ve learned while being a server is that I was able to calculate and distribute tips to associates based on their performance and helpfulness towards me throughout our shifts, the better they did, the more I compensated their work effort.

Aside from Outback, I’m also a brand ambassador and sales and marketing intern for SIDELINES Sportswear in Frazier, PA. Although this was a small business operation it gave me true insight on what it takes to run a small business. From the daily pros and cons that occur throughout the day, to managing client information and using leads to close deals with potential clients. This internship also increased my experience in Customer and Human Relations through daily e-mails and phone calls based of gathered leads. While working in their office, I was responsible for over $1,300 in sales in my first month alone. Now as a brand ambassador, I more or less represent the company in the field and look for potential clients that I can refer to SIDELINES Sportswear and gain commission from it. Most importantly, during my time at SIDELINES Sportswear I gained hands on experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Quikbooks which I know will benefit me immensely as I search for a career after college.

About Me

I am a driven individual who is motivated by success. I have been described as someone who is personable, determined and reliable. I have experience coaching 6th and 7th graders in Basketball during my early High School years. Towards the end of High School I worked as a Server at La Campagnola, a four star restaurant located in South Jersey. Serving has taught me to have unbelievable patience, enhance my time management and improve my people skills. I left serving to further my education at West Chester University in the fall of 2014. In the Summer of 2015 I worked for Sherwood Landscape, Lighting and Design based out of South Jersey. I’m currently the Public Relations chair of Pi Kappa Phi and have also been on the recruitment committee since the beginning of 2015. More recently, I’ve been a sales and marketing representative for SIDELINES sportswear in Frazier, PA as a summer internship in 2017. As of now, I am currently a server at Outback Steakhouse while finishing my last semester of college and searching for a beginning to a new career path.
